This work is rather new to me, but I already really love it. I love that Venegas presents these images in sort of a neutral way–because every image is already really loaded. I always have trouble with how much to show my hand in something and I have started to really like photography because it lets me feel a bit more neutral, as naive as that may be.
These images, like Rodney Graham’s work, don’t make me feel as if I am able to participate in the life that Venegas was a part of. It makes me consider my position in the world in relation to the position this family finds itself in.
These people also seem to be capable of showing affection and emotion, though in most of the photos Venegas seems to catch people off guard. I can’t help but think of Tina Barney and how she was quoted as describing this lack of emotion as being hereditary or inherited. Is the difference then nationality? Duration of wealth?
