Guy Ben-Ner is interesting in relation to Meredith James, because they both seem to have clear plans for the final works, but Guy Ben-Ner really lays out his goals for you. There always seems to be a kind of meta-cleverness to his work, that is downplayed by the lo-fi quality of his work.
When I saw his work at MassMOCA, I was really pumped. Here is someone who is full of ideas, and a specific kind of humor. He spends time with his family! His piece that MassMOCA funded seemed to speak to his body of work and say, Well, what now? Now that his kids are older, and his marriage has fallen apart, what make work about?
It seemed the answer was life, which was refreshing. I always thought a video like Stealing Beauty was just as much about actual life as it was about a (albeit frequently interrupted) theatrical presentation of ideas.
