La vie est un long fleuve tranquille
This French cult classic looks so different to me than when I watched in high school. It’s so much more ridiculous than I remember. I believe my host families recommended I watch it because I would understand it, and because it was filmed in the region.
It has a simple plot: two very different families’ children are switched at birth. One family is wealthier, super uptight and Catholic (they vous-vois one another) and the other is really tacky and lives off of the government.
The movie is really about the north of France, and the stereotypes the French had/have for it. (Even today they make movies about how dumb the people in the north are supposed to be: Bienvenue chez les ch'ts came out twenty years after this film). The costuming and set design is really over the top. And this song– I bet anyone alive after this movie came out in France knows it.
