I don’t really know how I feel about Candida Hofer as an artist or photographer. This is partially because I still don’t know anything about photography, except for a superficial history of it and a handful of big names.
Anyway, I love these photographs because I feel like it gives me glossy access to these places. No one is there to remind me that I’m not there, I can just admire their luxury and classiness. Just look at that floor. My favorite game to play with these images may be comparing them to miniatures from the Art Institute of Chicago.
Also it reminds me that there a lot of places in Europe like this that have been preserved and maintained. I’m sure that these palaces look a lot emptier now than they would have been before things were auctioned off, given to museums, etc.
